After 30 years running a hundred bed ski chalet business in Switzerland Robert and Hilary Markland downsized to a five bed boutique hotel in Hereford four years ago – and set about creating their dream garden.
Their creativity and hard work has paid dividends with their South Bank Hotel winning Hereford in Bloom’s best business garden in the city and a £100 voucher from sponsors Radway Bridge Garden Centre. Their guests love the garden and it is certainly good for business.
What are the city’s negatives? A lack of hotels , traffic congestion , the poor state of Commercial Road which their visitors must face walking into the city centre and the urgent need to regenerate High Town and attract more independent traders to boost visitor numbers. And the positives? The cathedral and its Mappa Mundi attraction, the River Wye and its surrounding countryside.
Hilary sings with Hereford Choral Society and Robert, who was born in Wigmore enjoys fishing on the Wye , they share an interest in cycling and are about to undertake a sponsored 500 mile ride from Geneva to Venice to create greater awareness of the need to prevent suicides.
