Hereford’s top gardeners were rewarded for their efforts when the prizes in the Hereford in Bloom’s best gardens competition were presented at Radway Bridge Garden Centre, sponsors of the annual competition. Radway Bridge Garden Centre voucher prizes were presented by Kevin Knipe, chairman of Hereford in Bloom and Annabelle Pearson of the garden centre.
The first prize of a £60 Radway voucher was won by Peter Amor, founder of Wye Valley Brewery and retired landlord of The Barrels in St Owen Street who retired five years ago to a house in South Bank Road where he created a stunning garden which also features pictures painted on the walls. Judge Annabelle Pearson of Radway Garden Centre said: “Lovely use of space. You wouldn’t realise you were in the middle of the city.”
Winner of the best garden outside the city boundary was Joyce Guest of Holmer who has devoted 25 years creating her garden described as ‘breath taking ‘ by Annabelle. She said: “A beautifully balanced garden featuring individual areas of colour and interest. Each one could be a picture on a postcard.”
Robert and Hilary Markland of the South Bank Hotel on South Bank Road were winners of the best commercial garden £100 voucher and winner of a new category for the best Courtyard garden was Derek Bridges of Clive Street whose efforts, said Annabelle “made passers by stop and stare.”
